I have been dealing with theses pricks for awhile now. They sent me a return for the year 2001 and then sent me a bill for the same year acouple months later. In my mind thats fine that I owe them money but don't send me $1200 and then ask me for $3500 on their mistake. Long story -short..They just sent me notifacation that a Lien has been placed against me. I will set a payment plan up with them but I closed all my bankaccounts before they could get to them (cat and mouse). If I open a new bank account at a different bank how long will it take for them to track me. I know this sounds stupid of me and I agree but I am extremely stubborn and its the principle that makes me mad. They made the mistake in the return not me. I owe you $2300 thats fine don't send a return and then ask for what i owe and the extra you sent me?????

I've never dealt with stock before, so i'm not sure what capital gains has to do with it, does only the actuall cash get taxed. I reinvested in a 529 and also in a reg investment account. I know i'm going to have to talk to a good acct. but i'm curious at this point of what i'm looking at.

This past Sept I purchased my first home (no points, and only about $1,000 down after paying closing and taxes) I am also a part- graduate student and am working full time, I am trying to get a picture of what my taxes will be like this year.

I am 25 and un-married, so the only exemption I will take is me.

1. My Fiancee's father gave me $5,000 for the closing costs (have a gift letter), Do I have to claim this on my taxes?

2. I know nothing about the lifetime learning/ HOPe credits are these something that i can claim?

3. Can i expect a larger tax return then last year because i purchased the house? I only made 3 mortgage payments in 2006. My total gross income will be under 37k, with about 2,500 going to pension funds

I know this can be done. I've done it before. But I forgot where? Does anyone know? Thanks. Oh and my taxes are really pretty simple still at this point in my life. I do get a return that's worth receiving but not worth spending money on someone to prepare my taxes. Thanks again!

Since I'm using my company insurance benefits on my partner, I wonder if I can claim her as my dependent to avoid some 30+% of some 3+K 'worth of insurance'?
what if her father already calims her as a 'dependent', while she's actually a college student on scholarships/loans/grants?

Or put it the other way
say my annnual income is 80k while her dad is less than half of that. Would it be more beneficial for me to claim her as a dependent? or for her dad?

I live in California, by the way.

Thanks
-Victor

Are you able to claim dependents that work part time jobs?
Is there a limit to how much the can make a year and still be able to file taxes as dependent of another? If thats not too clear here is an example:

A 16 year old that made 9k in 2005 working part time, can she/he still be claimed by the parents? and still get child credit? Also can she or he file their taxes filing as dependent of another?

I am getting married 12-31-06 and I am confused as to how I am supposed to file taxes after the marriage... Separately or Jointly? If separate then there must be a reason or you get less back and if jointly then stiill less because of my daughter. My 1 year old daughter is not his and he has no legal rights to her so won't we have to file separately? and will there be a penalty because we are filing separately because of a child that doesn't belong to the other parent? We are also getting married the last day of the year so we technically wouldn't have to file joint... correct? But then what about next year??

My fiance and I have been living together since June 2005. He has been the sole supporter in the household. I am supposed to be receiving child support (court ordered) from my Ex husband but he has yet to pay a dime. I do not work, and have no income what-so-ever. I recently had a baby by my fiance in Sept 2006.
My question is will my finace be able to claim me and my 2 children from my previous marriage, as dependents on his 2006 tax return?

Since I purchased the house I put in a patio, finished garage, planted new grass, and some other improvements totaled $10K.

How do I report this on my taxes? As what improvement or repair? This is my primary residence.

Do I have to have the receipts to prove it? Plus I did the work myself and did not hire anybody?

How do I report and how much should be able to deduct?

I worked in a hospital for 6 months and resigned my job as my husband got job and moved to Oklahoma. Since the hospital spent all the expenses for bringing us here from India, they asked me the refund of the above expenses. The amount they asked me $ 9700.00 and we gave them post dated cheques and is being collected from us on monthly basis. So far we paid $ 5700.00. We did not receive any receipt for the payment. I would like to know if I am eligible for any tax refund on the above amount.

I am an employee is my employer is 50 miles away from home in California. I work from home at least 3 days a week and have to commute 2-3 days a week to work, 50 miles each way.

What tax deductions available to me?
Can I deduct home-office, if so how much?
Can I deduct gas/car/milage, if so how much?

Please note, I am not self-employed but a regular employee.

Thanks for any feedback.
