For this question, I'm asking about providing health insurance for all Americans who either are legally into this country or people who are natural-born citizens into the USA. Would you support it? (I'm not including illegal people in this country because I'm assuming in Mexican citizens knew they wouldn't be able to have the insurance maybe some of them would stay in Mexico to begin with)

I am planning to buy a used item on eBay through an antique store. The seller happens to be in California as well (Los Angeles County). Can he charge me sales tax on a used item? This item is not a car or house.

Can you provide references? Or the section of the tax law?

I am thinking about doing them myself next year. I'm sick of paying these accountants to do my returns for a high cost when I've heard it's easy to do them on your own. Is TaxAct any good?

I just got a promotion at work with a significant pay increase. How do I make sure I don't get stuck with a huge debt to the IRS at the end of the year?
I'm married, I don't claim my kids on my W-4, I don't have many deductions, except my home interest payment and my student loan interest payment, and maybe now I can deduct expenses like cell phone and uniforms (I'm a nurse). I am putting 8% in a 401K that is pre-tax, but I might be able to add more now (it's not matched).
Any suggestions?

A friend of mine is in a bit of a jam. He is an independent contractor and a company he worked for didn't pay him. When they filed their taxes claimed they paid him a ridiculous sum of money (to the tune of 90k) and he is having a heck of a time proving to the IRS that this didn’t happen (In fact, the original agreement was for 1 or 2k I believe, but I am not sure if this was documented any where). He sent them copies of his bank statements but that wasn’t enough. At this point he is deep in debt and can’t really afford a lawyer. Is there something he can do on his own to resolve this? What proof would he need to show that he never received this money? Thanks.

I am getting married tomorrow, and in leu of that, my fiancee and I are updating our w-4's.

A little background:
a) She has a son, 2 years old, that lives with us full time
b) I make 27,000/yr
c) She makes 16,000/yr
d) We rent an apt (but plan to buy in about 2 years, hopefully less)
e) She currently claims our son

If you need any more information, let me know. If you want to contact me directly, jon at phazm dot net is the best address to reach me by.

I want to know what would be the best amount to claim. (We really don't know anything about this, it's sad really) We don't know if we should file jointly or seperately, who should claim our son, etc.

Thanks in advance!

We are legally divorced and have 50/50 custody. I have our son from Monday after school through Friday when I drop him off at school. I provide medical insurance for him. My ex wants to claim him on his taxes this year but I feel I should. Which one of us can legally claim him? My ex says that if I claim him he wants half of whatever I get. Can he legally insist on that? Thanks in advance.

Is there a easy way to decide whether one goes 1099 or w2?

I normally prefer w2 but recently get more 1099 calls on job hunting.

I am used to thinking that one must make more 1099 to equal w2.
But is there some method to help figure this?

Is there any law that says we have to pay income tax? The IRS cites a lot of code, but this code has to come from a law passed by the congress, and it is this law I am looking for. And the 16th amandment says congress can pass those laws, but it still remains that people in congress have to pass those laws. So where is the law? (P.S. I am not trying to avoid my taxes because I don't make enough money to pay taxes, I am just curious).
