Say you owed the state $4500 in taxes and are on a payment plan that you are current on. You also owe the IRS $18,000 and are trying to get a payment plan with them. As luck may have it you come into $5,000. Which do YOU pay? Pay off the state? Or see if the IRS will take the 5k call it good and keep up the payments to the state.

My husband and I have been separated since March of 06. However, we lived together during Jan & Feb of 06 and Sept-Dec of 06...which is roughly 6 months. He worked a full time job making $22k for the year plus cash jobs on the side and I only worked Nov. and Dec of 06 full time and substitue taught the rest of 06 probably making less than $3K total. We have 2 children ages 8 and 9. We have finally decided to go through with our divorce right here at tax time and I wasnt exactly sure how to file so we each filed separate extentions. I was wondering if I need to file for innocent spouse relief because he works on the side making cash and I have no idea of exactly how much he made for the year doing side jobs. Should we file joint with an innocent spouse relief form or should i file separately to avoid any liability issues???

I'm about to start a business and was curious how much to keep out of the profits for taxes. Lets say i sell 50k a month in product with around 20% of profit, which is like 10k a month. Out of that 10K how much should I hold back for taxes? I do plan to use a bit of it to reinvest back in the business, probably 50% of the 10k or so. I'm just curious how you figure out how much to hold back so I don't get a huge tax bill at the end of the year that I couldn't afford. Also, if I only have to play taxes on the profit after business expenses, what kind of expenses can be deducted? thanks for any help you can provide, i'd consult an accountant but unfortunetely, all the money i currently have is tightly budgeted for startup costs. Thanks.

In Washington State, the Department of Revenue collects a use tax from its residents each month on the 20th.

A description can be found at http://dor.wa.gov/content/findtaxesandrates/usetax/ and a FAQ sheet here: http://dor.wa.gov/docs/pubs/excisetax/retailsales_usetax/usetax.pdf

It appears to be a law to pay this tax, but rather conspicuously absent of enforcement. When it applies, do you pay it?

Sources area: Please provide number of years as a WA resident.
