They keep sending letters saying that they are checking something and that the money will be sent out soon, but we still haven't received it. What could they be checking?

Try going on-line to www.irs.gov and find "where's my refund". You will need the taxpayers social security number, the filing status for the return, and the exact amount of the refund you were expecting. It may shed some light on the status. If not, you could try calling the IRS and speaking to someone personally, the number is 1-800-829-1040.

This year there's a lot of focus on returns with EIC credits that look like they could be questionable, so that might be it. Or if you claimed dependents that weren't your minor children or didn't live with you, it could be that.

If it's not one of those, could be a large number of things. Basically they're saying that something on your return looks questionable. That doesn't mean it's wrong or that anything will get disallowed, but until they resolve it you won't get your refund.

Do the letters give any clue as to what they're checking? If not, since it's been so long, you could call and ask, but might not get an answer.

It sounds like you don't know what's going on and the IRS isn't telling you anything specific. I would contact them (by phone, probably) and tell them your problem--ask them what exactly is the problem and after talking to them, you'll probably know when to expect the money.
