NY state tax department a few years ago set up a task force to follow a group of "church lady" types. NY state in its diligent effort to crack down on these viciuos sales tax offenders followed them down to a shopping mall in Pennsylvania. The task force waited in the parking lot until these sales tax offenders made their purchases. Then with James Bond intrige the members left their vehicles and proceeded to these offenders and issued them papers to report their sales tax difference (1%) and to pay that to the state. So if you remember this absurdity please respond with the date and the location and if you recall what newspaper carried it.

I was married and had two children. I divorced and began a relationship with my ex husbands brother a couple years later. We also have 2 children, reside together, but are not married. For about 5 yrs now, since I was not working and was a college student, my "boyfriend" claimed "our" kids and "my" kids and filed Head of Household since he provided over half of support for all 4 kids. I graduated in Aug and have been working since then so I am going to file taxes myself this year. My "boyfriend" made almost 3 times what I made since I only worked part of the year. Is the correct way to file to have him again file Head of Household and claim all 4 kids? Or should I have him claim "our" two and then claim "my" two myself...this gets us the best refund but I'm not sure if it is okay to split the kids this way since we live in the same residence. If I split the kids, he would file Head of Household with "our" two and I would file either Head of Household of Single with "my' two.

I'm only going down for 48 hours, so I don't qualify for a personal exemption (since it's worth more that $200).

We file taxes separately. She is a full time grad student and has not had any income for the last three years. Since this is the end of the year are there any tax deductions (charitable or otherwise) she should be aware of to apply before this friday.

I am selling my apartment building I have owned for nearly 4 years. Are my options to buy a new property or can I use that money to improve my home. Or does that not offset the gain.
Also,
just checking... tax on capital gains is based on your tax bracket or do they have a set taxable percentage.
Thanks so much!

I was wondering if there is a level of income below which someone does not have to pay Social Security. I know you pay up to $97k, but do you have to pay all the way from $0-$97k? or from $x-$97k?

If I remember correctly, my economics teacher in high school said that if I indicate I am a student, I will get all of the federal income tax I paid that year back. Is this true? Or am I remembering incorrectly?

I mean technically, yes you are supposed to have it. But if you really wanted to, i.e. your employer is taking forever to mail it out, couldn't you just take info off your end-of-the-year pay stub and use that to file taxes? I'm sure H and R block wouldnt be too happy about it, but what if you did taxes yourself? Thoughts?

My husband sold a land in india, and gained good profit. He wants to invest the profit in some schemes in order to avoid capital gain tax. REC and National Highway Bonds are advised. But they are not announced for subscription. Can anyone tell me whether nationalised Banks too take deposits of Capital gains.? Any other option available, ?

I got $5,000 signing bonus from the employer in 2005 and I paid income tax on it. I changed job in 2006. Because I have worked less than two years for the employer as required by the contract, I have to pay back about $2,000 to the employer with personal check since my final pay check plus vacation pay could not cover signing bonus. This $2,000 should be deducted from my total income. How do I file tax return to deduct this $2,000? Thank you very much.

I'm trying to figure out how the tax benefits are computed when I make tax-deductible donations for charity. If I donate $1000 for charity, does it come out of the amount I would have been taxed anyhow? Or do I pay $200 out of pocket and the remaining comes out of Uncle Sam?
