MY BROTHER IN LAW SEPARATED FROM HIS ESTRANGED WIFE ON MARCH 25TH, 2005. SO HE WAS WITH HIS WIFE FOR JANUARY, FEBRUARY, AND MARCH, AND THEY HAVE 3 CHILDREN. HE MOVED TO SAN DIEGO ON MARCH 25 2005, AND THEN WENT AND VISIT HIS CHILDREN ON APRIL 7TH, 2005, AND THEY WERE BEING NEGLECTED BY THEIR MOTHER, THAT HE BROUGHT THEM TO LIVE IN SAN DIEGO. AFTER SPENDING 2 WEEKS WITH THEIR MOTHER, IN THE SUMMER, SHE RETURNED THEM TO US, AND DID NOT EXCERCISE HER SUMMER VISITATION. THEN ON NOV 14TH 2005. SHE TOOK THE 2 OLDER KIDS BACK TO CENTRAL CA, AND WE HAD THE YOUNGEST UNTIL JAN 14 2006, HE WAS COURT ORDERED TO RETURN TO MOTHER. BUT SHE CLAIMED ALL 3 KIDS FOR 2005, AND WE JUST GOT A NOTICE FROM IRS SAYING THAT SOMEONE ELSE USED THE KIDS NUMBERS, BEING THEIR MOTHER. SO WITH OUR SCHOOL & DAY CARE RECORDS, AND THE 3 MONTHS THEY BOTH HAD THE KIDS, WILL THE MOTHER HAVE TO PAY BACK THE ENTIRE TAX RETURN FROM LAST YEAR AND FINE? WHAT ARE THE FINES. THE KIDS WERE 8,5,3 AT THE TIME. THANK YOU.

What factors should I consider when trying to pick an accountant? This year I got married, bought a house, my wife is in graduate school, and I am repaying my school loans, so I am expecting to make out pretty well tax wise and would like to get a start on the impending tax season.
Also, are "chain" accountants like H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt any better/worse than local accountants? Is it better to work with a smaller accountant from whom I can get personal service?

When I did my taxes (at HR block last February) they didn't count the car I donated. It was worth $4,060 at the time of donation and in good working condition. I kept the receipt and am now wondering if they made a mistake? If not, could someone (like a CPA) explain to me why they didn't count this large donation?

Thanks!

I have been living with my girlfriend and her 6 year old daughter for over 2 years now, and someone told me I should be filing head of household on my taxes. Her daughters father pays very little in child support, and I make 85% of the household income, my girlfriend just works part time. We are currently renting but closing on a house the end of December. What would be the best way to file to get the biggest refund back?

My ex-boyfriend and I have a son together. We had lived together since before our son was born. This year, in October, we moved apart and our son lives with me full-time. Every year previous, my ex has filed with our son, in his taxes, as he's made more and has been Head of Household, so it's made sense to. Since we moved with only 3 months left in 2006, who files taxes claiming our son? Dad or me? Thanks for the advice!

My ex-husband and I have joint custody with me maintaining physical custody of my daughter. By court order, I am the only one allowed to claim her on my taxes. We have been divorced for over 6 years, and I had been filing head of household, collecting EIC because I qualify. Memorial Day weekend she moved into the next town to live with her dad because he, up till then was living over 1000 miles away and she only saw him 2 times a year. The custody papers have stayed the same, we only have a verbal agreement for her staying with him. She is 17, and would be able to choose in front of a judge anyway. She continues to stay there because she now goes to school and has a part time job in that city. Because I had her exactly 6 months and him too, can I still claim head of household since neither paid more for her expenses? Like I said, the papers say I claim her on taxes and I have LEGAL physical custody, though she stays with him.
