I made about 60,000. My husband, a student, about 20,000. We have 1 dependent. We own a home, in my name. How should we file? Jointly, together? Please only answer if you know and also, we will be doing our own taxes.

My husband and I are gotmarried on December 8 and I didn't work for 2005 and don't work, didn't work this year so how should he file this year? Is it joint? I received public assistance this year and my kids dad is not supporting them ( he owes alot in child support) and never claimed them. Even if my husband didn't live with us the year, I know they give us the whole year because we were married before December 30 but can he claim my kids when we file joint only with his income?

Or anything else that may be considered tax deductible. I'm not sure if there's a certain form that needs to be filled out to accompany the 1040/1040-EZ. Lord knows I'd have one hell of a time getting an answer from the IRS.

I just received a new state property tax assessment and they say the value of my home has more than doubled. We have not made any additional improvements and the home does not have many of the features that neighboring homes have (ie: central heat/ac (we have elec baseboard), basement, garage, etc.) How do I show that the states assessment is incorrect?

I'd rather keep my money, earning interest on it, than send it to the IRS throughout the year. Is there a law that says I must pay it quarterly instead of paying it all on April 15??

i had a pell grant foo school and had to drop out due to work related issues. the school sent me a letter stating that the government was refunded their money, but that i owe them the tuition now, which is fine, and i have started paying them already. my question is, will owing a community college that money hold up my tax refund in any way? can they seize my refund for repayment of the balance since the government has already gotten their money back, or will i get my refund? it is not in collections yet, as i have made payments already.

It is still listed on my Nov. phone bill. Even though it's just $1.02, shouldn't it be removed with the new tax law?

Ive been working abroad non stop almost three years (Jan 04-present.) And I Have not filed income tax reports since 2003. Originally I was studying and was paid a stipend below US poverty line (SS even was not withheld..)Now I am paid (as a teacher) entirely by a foreign company with my primary residence and all assets here. Since I never filed, (I may have had nothign to report) I am wondering what various options or problems I might have with regard to my U.S. taxes (both old and new) should I return to the U.S and find work teaching or in the public sector. Is it likely I would need to backfile or even a tax lawyer?

A couple of days ago, my inept manager at work blurted out that she only pays $1.75 per paycheck to state taxes (we live in michigan), I questioned her on this and she said it was because she claims 6 dependants. I asked her how she can claim 6, because the only people in her house are her 2 kids and herself.

She stated that she claim herself and the 2 kids as 3, then also claims herself as "head of household" and also gets 2 more dependant deductions because she is low-income.

Does this even seem right to you? Is this legal to do??

I have a friend who, while in Washington, D.C. flipped of the IRS building. Personally, I can't see why people complain so much about paying taxes.

I file head of household, as so does he, but not in 2004. Can that come back on me? What should he do. I still care for him and don't want to see him jailed or something.
