I got my W-2 form for the last year in April - I filled out the other relevant forms and mailed all documentation to the IRS in time. However, three months back I got a letter from IRS saying that they had a problem with processing my documents, because my name was misprinted on my SSN card. As I had been out of town on vacation, I did not see the letter until recently. What should I do now? I don't owe them any money, but will I still get into trouble?

These stock options are ISOs, which are presumably tax free, so long as I convert the options to stock and hold ALL of the converted stock for a minimum of one year. I don't know however if I will be affected by AMT in the year I convert. Also since the options terminate in January 08, would it be wise to convert them in thirds; one-third this year, a third next and the final third in 08?

It would be a waste if they send me the 20% downpayment for a house if it gets taxed by the IRS presumably as income(?) on my part even before I purchase a property.

I had my son in August and had heard about getting extra on your returns for the first year of having a child. I was wondering if this is true how much it usually is and what it is called.

I'm a tax accounting student. There's this one part in the chapter business and hobbies that I find odd:

"An activity (that does not involve horses) is profit-seeking if it shows a profit in at least 3 of any 5 consecutive years ending with the taxable year in question."

Can someone help me out deciphering this text? It doesn't explain it further in the book. What's up with the horses? Why not cows or sheep?
