My mom is very healthy at 70. I've been managing her IRA for many years. In the meantime, I've been providing for her living expenses so she wouldn't need to tap into the IRA. We've been making mandatory withdrawls and saving that in a separate account. Recently, she mentioned to me that she might leave her IRA to me in her will.

That brings up this issue. If I have a choice, what is the best way to inherit money? I could ask my mom to withdraw the IRA money gradually over the next 15-20 years (she comes from a long-lived family) and possibly give me the money as cash. I could leave things alone and possibly inherit the traditional IRA. Or, I could ask her to convert the traditional IRA into a roth IRA. Any suggestions?

I track my checking account and my American Express account with Microsoft Money. I put all of my job expenses on my Amex card and as the charges come in to Money I categorize them as "Reimbursed Job Expense". Then I get a reimbursement check from my employer and categorize that also as Reimbursed Job Expense. That is awkward right there because it isn't an expense, but its the only way I've found to stop Money from wanting to treat it as income. At that point when I pay the Amex card, I can't mark that payment Reimbursed Job Expense because that would make it look like my expenses are doubled. So I guess I need to mark the payment as an account transfer? Is this how you would do it?

Here's my dilemma. I have about 10k in the bank. I could either use that money to pay off most of my debt (eg. car note, school loan) or hang on to that money for the upfront cash required when buying a home.

The APR on my debt is approx. 5% which is probably going to be better than the mortgage APR I'd be getting. Should I pay off the debt so that I can better qualify for a mortgage loan or should I use that money for the upfront costs?

I heard that some lenders would be willing to up the loan to roll in the closing costs, etc. If I do this, then I can pay off my personal debt to better qualify for the mortgage.

What would you do?

Thanks

I bet that sometime in the next few years there will be a local, regional or national emergency that will make it difficult or almost impossible to pay for things for a few days using a Credit or Debit Card.

Who knows what will happen. Maybe a banking failure, an Internet crash, weather disaster or a terrorist attack that is so bad the banking system fails. In this case having some cash around would be very nice.

How much cash do you have to deal with such an emergncy?

Under 62, Unemployed, but on Military Pension (1099-R), I have submitted $3K through payment plan, but do not have any Earned Income. Should I leave the money and pay 6% penalty or have the money returned. (If money is returned am I subject to 10% penalty for early withdrawal, even though deposits were not authorized?)

Current stats:
Rent-$535
Water/Trash-$30
Electric-$70
Required Rental Insurance-$20
TOTAL:$655 per month/$7860 per year

Stats for different apt:
Rent-$430
Water/Trash-Included
Electric-$70(smaller place,no icemaker or dishwasher to use, window AC/heating units so we can use better climate control, but washer/dryer connections which we don't have now)
Rental Insurance-not required
TOTAL:$500 per month/$6000 per year

We're currently living in an apartment that is as much as we're willing to pay for an apartment. It's nice, but not one of the overly pretty brand-new complexes in town. The next one bedroom apts up from this one cost $700-900.One step lower that we'd be willing to live in(not drug infested, rundown)would be the apt for $430.We're wanting to save to buy a house hopefully in the next 5 years. Question:Is the $1860 savings per year worth moving to a slightly smaller apartment & going through all the stresses(financially, mentally, physically) of a move?
