a dividend check for $171.00 from one of his life insurance policies. The account I set up to close out his affairs was closed last year. It's made out to him directly. How can I get this cashed? I don't want to have a new check reissued, because then it would be issued to his trust, which no longer has any checking accounts associated with it. I'm at a loss as to what to do here.

I'm trying to work out a settlement with the auto-insurance company over an injury that happened last December. They're offering $3,500, but we want $5,000. I was wondering how much it would cost them in legal fees, and lawyer costs if we were to bring this to court. It could help in our bartering if we know they'll be saving money just settling. Thanks.

Our understanding is that "short-term disability insurance" covers any injury, ailment or other medical condition that causes you to miss an amount of time from work defined in your policy as "short-term". My wife was taken from work to the hospital by ambulance. Surgery was performed. Her personal doctor prescribed 6 weeks off from work. She had been treated a couple years earlier for similar heart palpitations. However, the issue was not over whether or not her insurance would cover the actual treatment. She purchased the short-term disability insurance as a supplemental policy to cover unforseen circumstances that caused her to miss work - and income. How is it that the insurance company can refuse to pay citing "pre-existing condition" under these curcumstances?

Do I just give them my policy # etc... and they mail the insurance company a bill or does the ER know exactly what coverage I have right then and there? My insurance coverage is supposed to have started as of 12/1 but the 800 number I call says not until 1/1/08. I should be covered now, but don't want to get turned away at the door or stuck with a huge bill.

my boyfriend's father was forced into early retirement because of the cancer he has. he signed up with Cobra, as he was no longer eligible of the coverage he had through his job, stating that Cobra was the only company to accept pre-existing conditions at a rate of $800/month. he is now faced with a life or death situation, needing a rare radiation treatment costing $50,000 per tumor and there are 3 in his abdomen. of course, there is no guarantee of this procedure's success, but his Dr.'s are optimistic. Insurance will not cover any of this! if there are no other options in the way of insurance coverage, there could possibly be a significant payment left for them (or his wife) that is certainly NOT feasible.
Please advise.

I was in a car accident a couple of months ago and the person that hit me did not have insurance. I had to file the accident on my uninsured motorist insurance. I have been going to the chiropractor since the accident and I am still hurting. I would like to file a pain and suffering suit but I am not sure where to begin. I just noticed the person that hit me bought a brand new car so I know they have full coverage insurance now. Should I consult a lawyer or just let me insurance handle it?

I got laid off two weeks ago due to shortage in work. I will start receiving the unemployment benefits the coming week. I was scheduled to have a varicocele surgery in the first week of January. My wife also was scheduled to have an IUI procedure in late December. However, due to the termination of my health insurance I am not sure what we should do now.
Should I buy a health insurance temporarily and if so how much it will cost. Is there any other alternative in Ohio for unemployed people?
Thanks.

Someone I know has arthritis and gets an injection every couple months. She was at a job that covered the injection but she was in the middle of changing jobs. She put her two weeks notice in on 8/8/07. They told her to consider that her last day and not to work the two weeks out. They also told her, her insurance would still cover her injection on 8/10/07. She had the injection and just today got a bill for $13,000 for the injection on that day. She also got a letter on 9/10/07 saying her insurance was up on the day she was let go but the work place said she was covered for the rest of the month. Her new job she started the next week has insurance to cover this. Why was she billed now for it? Who fault is it and what should she do to get this right. She obviously doesn't have the money to pay and shouldn't. Thanks for your help, this is so insane.

I had a visit two months before I was forced to changed coverage(I was coming off my parents insurance to an individual policy) to a chiropractor's office. The reason for my visit was that I was feeling sort of stiff and that I wanted to see how I'd feel after that. When I obtained my new policy I had an exclusion on it for any outpatient back treament of any kind: due to ongoing back problems.
When I called the plan up(golden rule by united healthcare plan 100) they led me to believe it was a misunderstanding and that I should have the doctor send in the information to them for review. Turns out they reviewed the information and the only thing they changed is now I am not "excluded for life" but will be reviewed a year after my policy is in effect to see if I am eligible for these benefits. When I called them up again customer service told me in simple words that if I had gone to any doctor recently any such possible symptoms and conditions would be excluded for at least a year.
