Depends on your plan.

PPO or Open Access type of account would result in an immediate remedy for your situation. Call your carrier or refer to their website for an in-network doctor for the most cost-effective treatment.

HMO with a referral option would require you to change your PCP. Since HMO's are dictated by the state you would have to reach out to your carrier to change the doctor. Some jurisdictions will allow immediate changes others may require 30 or 15 days notice. I have seen companies like Aetna that allow to change everyday.

In summary, call your carrier and validate.

If you have a PPO insurance policy, I would look for an in-network provider. Call your insurance company or go to your insurance companies web site. As long as your son has active coverage at the time of his appointment, the appointment should be covered (assuming that you do not have a deductible or your deductible has been met and other there are no other restrictions on your policy that could cause a denial).

Depending on your insurances and your type it should be within the same day. On your card should have your insurances company's name and phone # give them a call and see if the doctor you want to go to is part of their network. Some insurances company's will recommend other doctors based on other patients reviews.

Call the new doctor's office and make sure they take your insurance. If you are in the US, you should be able to just go to the new dr. Any more questions ask the new dr office or call your insurance company.

I just changed my primary doctor. All I did was call the insurance company and give them the new doctor information. You will have to give written permission to your new doctor to obtain your records from your previous physician. The insurance company will issue you new insurance cards with the new primary care physician's name.

Call the number on the insurance card when you have found a doc you like and tell them is is the new primary care physician, assuming your family is accepted at a patient. they will tell if the doc is on the plan. Some companies have web sites which list their docs, but they are not always up to date.

Call up your insurance company and ask them which doctors in your area they work with. Then you can have your current doctor fax the patient history to the new doctor and you can go right away.

If you have to select a PCP (primary care physician) it may not take effect until the 1st of the month if you do it on the 15th or after. BUT that's not in all cases. Check with your specific plan by calling member services.

Otherwise, it should be immediate.

Depends on the plan.
A PPO plan you just go to any doctor that is covered in that plan.
If it is an HMO call the insurance company.
It shouldn't take more than a day or two.

Call the number on the back of the card and ask. It's going ot depend on what type of plan you have. Typically, any changes in a primary care physician are effective the first of the following month.
