i'm taking up Paul Ricoeur this semester and i'm really having a hard time. i get his thought in the narrative identity but i don't understand him when it comes to his ethics and morality. our main text is "oneself as another" and we're focusing in his sixth and seventh chapter which are "the self the ethical aim" and "the self and the moral norm" respectively. can anyone give me a brief explanation of this? i'll be having my orals next week and i really need help. thanks!

my english class and i were talking abotu evil today and we went very into this topic and i just wanna see what people would say.. so consider these questions?!

what is considered evil?! who is to say what is evil and good?! are people evil, or do they have evil "faces" and make evil actions.?? Ok so is kiling evil?! what if they were trying to kill you, what do you do?! ok how about if there is a pregnant woman and the doctor says that either she or the baby lives after the birth, would she be evil if she chose herself, or evil if she chose the baby because her husband loves her? How about soldiers that are killing because their country sent them there.. they decide whats right and wrong at the new place.. forcing their beliefs upon the people... and no i'm not against or for the Terrorism War.... soo just think... and since has one known what good and evil was.. who thought you?! does religion play a part?! what if you dont belive in a god are you evil?!

The hope in an afterlife, the hope that there is something waiting in the light at the end of the tunnel, isn't that depressing?

Or do we take more than we give? When we give love, do we expect to receive it in return in the same amount or do we give only what we think that we will get back?

For example, I've always wanted to be an actress. I feel guilt, because my mom has always wanted me to become a teacher or a lawyer, and I know my thoughts make her upset. The thing is that, even if I make money out of being a teacher, I know I am never going to love my work as much as I 'd love acting.
So what's better? Doing something that will make you happy, or disappointing others and fail achieving what they consider important?

In some cases it's not even needed. I mean, God has given us free will, so... for example, why should I pray to have easy subjects to study -during the exam period- when the subjects are chosen by someone else, who has the free will to decide?

They come into the world with a feeling of royalty (and often act like it).
They have a feeling of "deserving to be here," and are surprised when others do not share that.
Self-worth is not a big issue; they often tell the parents "who they are."
They have difficulty with absolute authority (authority without explanation or choice).
They simply will not do certain things; for example, waiting in line is difficult for them.
They get frustrated with systems that are ritually oriented and do not require creative thought.
They often see better ways of doing things, both at home and in school, which makes them seem like "system busters" (non-conforming to any system).
They seem antisocial unless they are with their own kind. If there are no others of like consciousness around them, they often turn inward, feeling like no other human understands them. School is often extremely difficult for them socially.
They will not respond to "guilt" discipline ("Wait till your father gets home and finds out what you did").
They are not shy in letting it be known what they need.
