Have we become numb to the plights of others because of the media? Are humans (in general) less sympathetic to other humans? What about comparing developing nations to developed nations? Are 'western' citizens more cynical and pessimistic?

Personally, I've lived in small towns where neighbors are close and willing to help out each other. I've lived in cities like like S.F. and N.Y. where well dressed people step over the homeless like they're garbage..It seems to me that everything is a little more cut throat in larger cities, why is that?

It seem so bizarre that people like bad. Women love abusive men, men are attracted to slutty women, and Satanic gimmicks make people like Marylin Manson famous.

To list a few: getting my ears pierced at 2 1/2 ; my first day in pre-school at 4...both of these were accompanied with enormous fear. Is this why we have difficulty recalling anything else early in our life unless it was "shocking" to us in some way?

mine:

people looking down on others, and thinking that pity isn't a bad thing and that it doesn't rob someone of dignity..

people (men and women) tend to like 'drama' or conflict in their lives..they seem to enjoy the 'fixing' part of the problem (they have caused).

Which western country will be the first to have their own 21st century-style 'French Revolution'? I mean the kind of revolution that shakes the foundations of a country. And what would be a possible cause of this revolution?
