Who has the authority to define what marriage is?

I don't believe anyone can come up with a universal definition of marriage. Early cultures didn't have marriage at all. Later because of the male domination of society men had a number of women more for their exclusive use. These were generally referred to as concubines in the Bible. Women were also considered as prizes to the soldiers of battles won.

Modern day Christians try to say it is the union between one man and one woman...I bet they cannot show that to me in the Bible. They only parrot what they have heard someone else say and think they know.

There has been much controversy about the so called "Gay Marriage" of late. It is only for legal rights as stated below.

Marriage is only a government issued document that gives those named on the document certain legal rights pertaining to the sharing of property or products by mutual consent of those involved. As long as a government issues these documents, and because of the civil rights laws now accepted in most countries, no government can refuse the issuance of a marriage license to those so requesting for legal status.

Hey maybe that is the Universal definition of marriage!

Universal Definition Of Marriage

You are looking for a justification to call something between gays and lesbians the same thing as "marriage" which it is not. The universally accepted definition has been around for thousands of years and is common to cultures around the world. A few loudmouthed, egotistical, insecure wackos in San Francisco who think otherwise are not going to change it.

Each culture (and somethimes sub culture) has its own definition of what marriage is. This is not limited just to who and how many define a marriage, but what is expected of those involved, what sort of ritual is used to formalize it, how and for what reasons it is to be terminated.

Throughout history the idea of marriage has constantly changed. Generally criteria are set by religous leaders, though at times political leaders have also effected change.

Me. The union between one man and one woman. If you want to deviate from it, just come up with another term.
