I know the names of my great-grandparents, when they came to the U.S.A., even the ship (for the kids and great-grandma, great-grandpa must have came before them, or more unlikely after them) but I don't know where they came from and no one in the family does, just that they said Alsace-Lorraine, France. Is the last name Hartman unique to any areas?

I'm african american and am considering DNA geneology to trace my African ancestral roots. Can anyone who has done it share their experiences? And who should I go through?

My other ancestors are Anglo Saxon, Scottish, Irish, French...?
The surnames are:
Holcombe, Nash, Minor, Lavender, Pinkerton, Carson,
Owens, Mehaley, Mitchell, Marsh, Wright, Phipps, Edmundson, Gibbs

I think all these people were from around the Smoky Mountains, and I've guessed that the Indians were the females, but I also only have the history back to mid 1800's so far.

He arrived from Germany around 1879. I don't find any immigration information about him, so I wondered if his name was not really Berry but a name he might have chosen to sound more American. Any thoughts about what it could be?

Strange question I know, but I think a friend of mine may have passed away and I have no way of finding out. I've been desperately searching for public death records but I can't seem to find any. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We live in a very old 80 acre farm. It has been in my husbands family for over 100 years. Up by the road there is a foundation to what local people on our road (all of whom are passed away now) say was a little church. I guess the house we live in once was and old school house. (So they say) There is no record of this house it was here when the land was first purchased and it was abandoned. Anyways this very old woman came to the door and wanted to know what happened to the church because her Grandparents were burried in the graveyard to it. We didn't know anything about it. How can I find out? Kind of weird. I just don't want to go plant a tree with my kids or something and dig in the wrong spot. Right? How could a graveyard just be forgotton about? Maybe the woman is mistaken.

Im researching my family tree & have hit a bit of a block...I've found both my great-grandparents but have a problem with going back to my great-great-grandparents...

My great-grandfather had a very common name & I've found 100's of men with the same name, about the same age from the same area...how can I determine which 1 he is?

Also, on the 1881 census, my great-grandmother was recorded as a child, the head of the house being her mother as her father was in the Navy - there's no mention of her father's name or her mothers maiden name - how can I find her mothers maiden name & her fathers name?

I've tried looking for their marriage certificate as I think it will help but have no idea what year they married, all I know is my grandads (their son) date of birth.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated - I've tried things like ancestry.com & genesreunited but there's nothing of genesreunited & ancestry.com is too expensive.

I was looking at my family tree and several generations back my 7th great grandfather is listed twice but with two different women. I'm assuming he remarried or something but he had two sons, each with a different mother. The two sons then married and each had a child, a boy and a girl. The boy and the girl then got married and had a son. Is there any relation that would deem it inscestual?
