I think he had an accident first and then turned into a cat. The description of him becoming the cat would be great for my literacy group at school. I have read them Woof! by Alan Ahlberg but I'm looking for the cat book. Thanks

When I doubt my ability to succeed as a writer, or when I'm depressed, I sometimes read "Chicken Soup for the Writer's Soul." Knowing that others have experienced hardships--and more importantly, have overcome them--strenghtens me. And, it provides perspective.

Alex Haley was once so depressed by the continual rejection letters he'd received, he considered plunging into the ocean. Marcel Proust nearly withered away in a hotel bed in Paris after his mother, with whom he was extremely close, died. Fyodor Dostoevsky was exiled to Siberia for six years, faced a firing squad, and was forced to serve in the military for five years after his release.

I've thought about writing a book about the obstacles writers have overcome; I think it would inspire writers and non-writers alike. I know it would help me. So, my question is this: which writers overcame difficult circumstances?

I've read Robert Bly's "Secrets of a Freelance Writer," Peter Bowerman's "The Well-Fed Writer," and most recently, Jenna Glatzer's "Make a Real Living as a Freelance Writer" ... as you may imagine, my head is spinning from the wealth of information and advice in those books.

What should I do first? Should I contact companies, as Bly and Bowerman suggest, or magazines and websites, as Glatzer recommends? Do I need to have my company established before contacting anyone? And what about freelance writing websites--can I really make money from jobs posted there?

Have you noticed that when you dont give a complete answer to a kid's assignment, they turn your answer in as a violation? I am keeping tabs from now on. Any kid who whines and turns me in because I wont do their complete assignement gets NO MORE help. How do the other teachers here feel about that?? I am glad to offer help, but there is a limit to what is help and what is doing a kids work. Also, when I give assignments I am checking here to see which kids are here asking people to do their homework. I've found a few already and handed out a few F's. Beware homework cheaters - teachers are on to you. Any other teachers finding their students here getting their work done for them???

What do you think has a more lasting impression? Stories like Gone with the wind--it's a kind of tragedy, and it makes me think of the story all day long, nearly drives me mad....and stories like Wuthering Heights.......and then there's stories like Pride and Prejudice.....

Tragedies or happy endings? Why?
