Try reading this book. It might help.

And what someone above said about sending your stuff to yourself - there's no need. Your material is copyrighted as soon as you create it.

Don't worry, there is no reason to be afraid. Take a copy of all of your poetry, songs (lyrics and chord sheets) and any recordings you have and put them in a self enclosed envelope with your address on it. When it arrives at your address (snail mail, US postal ) DO NOT OPEN iT! The postal mark on the front and the unopened letter is your guarantee that you had written it by this date. This is legal and can be used in court as proof. Next, take a look at a site that helps you publish content and will help you get paid for it. Give it a try, it is easy and it will help give you exposure and show you the ropes a little.

My Dad was an amateur songwriter and learned of this contest years and years ago from a music publisher and producer. It is a great way to be heard by industry professionals. You need have no worries about your creations being ripped off either. Send in as many entries as you want. Many new songwriters got their start this way. You don't get paid for them right from the start, but it is a great way to get your foot in the door.
Good luck!
