Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, by Douglas Adams - don't mind the film, the books are excellent, and easy to read.
Any Discworld novel by Terry Pratchett.
I Robot, or any Isaac Asimov novel, I recommend I Robot as it is a series of short stories.
Red Dwarf by Grant Naylor., series of 3 or 4 books not sure, but perfect for 12-15's.

There are a few rgeat examples of this genre. Smoe of my favourite are,
Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, he'll laugh out aloud for days
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, best place to start with Tolkien
The Amtrak Wars by Patrick Tilley, very immersive. Has both Scifi and fantasy sides to it
His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullmam
Harry Potter by J.K.Rowling, great for any age group

Look out for John Wyndham 'The Midwich Cuckoos' and 'Chocky' are particularly good, but he's an excellent writer who actually has interesting characters - unusual in SciFi!!

piers anthony- xanth series. Its suitable for children and adults, a land made up of magic with lots of play on words-for example a weeping willow tree would be noticable because it would be the tree that is crying-shoefly pie is a pie made out of flies wearing shoes-mostly only fit for ogres to eat. It has lots of centaurs, kings, ogres and noble quests.I loved this series of books from him and everything is suitable for any reader.hope they try it out-there are over 20 books-all can be read a singular books or together and can be read out of order as most book focuses on one major character-while reading all will give you detailed info on all the major players.

It's more fantasy than sci-fi, but my best recommendation would be King Fortis the Brave!
