There is a line that goes something like "the heaviest weight I ever carried was the weight of my father as I carried his coffin." It also mention a path he knew as a child that seemed at the time to be a long road, but as an adult he realizes it was small. I think it was call a "The Homecoming" or something. It was in a grade school reader I had that was part of a series that included the book "A lizzard to Start with."

I'm taking History 11, and my teacher allows us to turn in book reviews for extra credit. The only thing is that they have to correspond to history (preferably US) until 1877 and they can't be the hackneyed classic titles out there like Anne Frank, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Huck Finn, etc. Help me out please!

The poem questions the purpose of war. You may have read it in high school (I know I did). The narrator is a soldier that spots an enemy. He thinks that had they met under different conditions they could be the best of friends ... something about drinking together in a pub ... and somewhere in the poem it mentions or makes a suggestion of being the first shooter.
Help me find the title, author, or link to this poem.
