When I was younger, there was nothing better to do then read. We didn't have cable and after my sports were done, I would curl up with a book. Why do people look at me like I have a third arm gowing from my chest when I tell them I'm going to go home and read?

Authors often go to bookstores around the country and read sections of their newly published books to groups of potential readers. Publishers and booksellers promote these events as a way to build better connection between the authors and readers and hopefully generate more sales for their books. I am interested to know if you attend these events, what do you think of them, what do you like about them, what don't you like about them, etc.? Thanks

Mine is The Charm School by Nelson DeMille. A great spy book! What would you say is the best? Please, no Bible, or Koran or the like because I'm not religious at all.

I love to read and would like to try out some more authors. My personal favorites are Nelson DeMille, Ken Follett, Stephen King, Robert Jordan, Robert McCammon, Dean Koontz, Margeret Weise, Tracy Hickman, and Neil Stenphenson among others.

For me, it would probably be Paul Coelho's "The Alchemist".

I thought it was a spectacular book that really makes you think and want to go after your dreams no matter what. I just like how effective it was in regards to the reader...

How about you?

Please don't say the BIble, Quran, or the Torah. Regardless of your religious affiliation, those books are meant to be respected considering they are not particularly the words of man but God.

I have read all of Tolken, Robert Jordan, Tad Williams, and even the Harry Potter series, and much to my dismay I liked it! Would you suggest a new author to read and why?

I'm writing a book and my opening sequence is a bit soft. What do I need in it to grab your attention? What do you like to have in an opening sequence in a book you read?

I want to know how Portia(in The Merchant of Venice) and Desdemona(in The Tragedy of Othello) can be compared and contrasted as the two women characters in Shakespeare's dramas?
Is there any similarities or differences?

All I remember was it came from a huge book of fairy tales, and I lost it a while ago. It had something to do with a man who went underground, and there was a 3 headed dog. There was a choice between gold, silver and bronze, and each did something. Thats all I know, and it is not Harry Potter! If anyone vaguely recognizes this story, anything would be helpful because I would like to read it again. Hopefully I got the details right and didnt confuse two stories. Thanks so much!!

I find, now that I am an adult, that I wish I would have read more as a kid. I read several books a month now and am bored with the Dean Koontz, Tess Gerritsen crowd. I want more substance. I've started to really like biographies/autobiographies and find I'm interested in the "older" great works of literature that I never read. I'd like to hear your suggestions of great autobiographies or the classics that you felt were fantastic. I have A Tree Grows in Brooklyn now and plan on starting that tomorrow but will want another one for next week. I've also read A Million Little Pieces and that was OK.............any other suggestions???

hopefully they are established and specialise in the printing of books.

i have given up for the most part on hollywood's ability to create horror film. I loved horror film when i was younger but there is very little out there that gives you that real inner dread
(though not nearly perfect, i thought that THE RING (2002) was a great example of dreadfull, serious horror.)
I would like to try reading a few horror NOVELS. i was wondering if anyone can give good suggestions to try out.

Actually it is two stories.
The first is about a cop who is on patrol and meets a man who looks like a bum, they have a quick conversation about how the bum was suppose to meet a friend there after so many years.
In the end it turns out that the cop is this friend but recognizes that his friend is a wanted criminal and does not want to arrest him. He ends up finding another officer to do it and tell his friend who he is.
The other story is about a couple, I believe they were on a ship, and the man gets into an argument about pearls with another passenger. The passenger claims that he can spot any fake from real and the husband asks him to tell whether his wifes pearls are real or fake. The expert knows that pearls are real but realizes the wife does not want her husband to know she had a rich lover.
If you know either of these stories please let me know, they have been driving me nuts for a long time, thank you.
