Authors often go to bookstores around the country and read sections of their newly published books to groups of potential readers. Publishers and booksellers promote these events as a way to build better connection between the authors and readers and hopefully generate more sales for their books. I am interested to know if you attend these events, what do you think of them, what do you like about them, what don't you like about them, etc.? Thanks

A book-reading has to be like play-acting - to make its pages come alive for the audience...
Many excellent writers are lousy actors - and their readings of their own writings can often nullify the impact of their own creations !
Some mediocre writers are excellent actors - and their dramatic renderings of their own writings can create a false impression about their work...
...There are also a few authors, who are blessed with a colourful stage presence and a splendid voice as well.
So, as one who has witnessed both extremes, as well as a few
pleasant exceptions, I'd say that [in most such cases !] the publishers should use a professional actor to do the 'reading' - with the author simply voicing the additional info about the book.

I often attend book readings by authors. How interesting they are depends on the personality of the author. Usually, it gives me quite a bit of insight into the book by being able to study the mannerisms of the person who wrote it.

I once attended a book reading by Sarah Bird, who kept laughing at what she had written. She stopped several times to elaborate on what real-life episode inspired the fictional account.

Book readings are best when accompanied by a question and answer session afterwards. Fabulous chance to get into the mind of the author -- as well as learn new things about the plot of the book.

What you should do if you happen to like sci-fi/fantasy is sign on to the website for Baen's Books. From there you can go to either the chat room or the Bar and discuss books you have read or wish to read with not only other readers but with the authors themselves. And get their feedback on your questions. Have fun!

I attended some Book readings.
The authors, in real life, may not be as interesting as they portray in their books.
Some authors,( who are as well-versed with "the gift of the gab" as their writings!) do a great job reading the works!
Others spoil the good impression we had about them , when they open their 'gab'!

Author book readings may or may not be fun. It depends on the book, the author and the place :-)
