If I remember correctly, the book does not spell it out exactly - but that is the crime she was convicted of - adultery. Which makes her an adulteress, so I would guess it could stand for either.

Adultery or adulteress, either one. It was the fact that she committed adultery that was important in the novel.

The correct answer is acually adultery because they do spell it out in the book if you make inferences.

i think it stood for adultery, because he said it stood for her sin, and her sin wasn't "adulteress", adulteress was what the sin made her.
