I've read it twice, once as an undergraduate and once as a graduate student. I appreciated the book and thought it was great at examining women's roles and analyzing society in general...in regards to conforming to others prescribed roles and being miserable...or discovering your authentic self and living life for yourself. I do like her short stories better though.

I read The Awakening during my freshman year of college. This was one of my favorite books written by Kate Chopin. The story is about a lady (i forgot the main character's name) who goes through this whole ordeal about expressing the kind of womanhood that wasn't allowed during the time the story was written. She has two children that she doesn't pay much attention to, she is married to a husband that she loves but seems to grow bored with. She has an affair with a man much younger than her and she falls in love with him. She leaves her husband and her children behind and moves on with her own life to do her own thing. At the end she kills herself after realizing a few life lessons. The book is very good and suggest you read it. It will be worth reading. It starts out a little slow, but you'll be glad you read it.
