Actually it is two stories.
The first is about a cop who is on patrol and meets a man who looks like a bum, they have a quick conversation about how the bum was suppose to meet a friend there after so many years.
In the end it turns out that the cop is this friend but recognizes that his friend is a wanted criminal and does not want to arrest him. He ends up finding another officer to do it and tell his friend who he is.
The other story is about a couple, I believe they were on a ship, and the man gets into an argument about pearls with another passenger. The passenger claims that he can spot any fake from real and the husband asks him to tell whether his wifes pearls are real or fake. The expert knows that pearls are real but realizes the wife does not want her husband to know she had a rich lover.

After Twenty Years, by O. Henry is the first one, I think. Second one might be his, too. It kinda sounds like it.

I think the first one is The Cop and the Anthem. It concerns a New York City hobo named Soapy, who sets out to get arrested so he can spend the cold winter as a guest of the city jail. Despite efforts at petty theft, vandalism, disorderly conduct, and "mashing", Soapy fails to draw the attention of the police. Disconsolate, he pauses in front of a church, where an organ anthem inspires him to clean up his life - whereupon he is promptly arrested for loitering.
