I was asked this question in my phylosophy class once. Don't just answer "to pay bills" or "because we have to." THINK about it. Curious to read the responses and award 10 pts!

I was wondering how people knew how large or small or how many islands were in each continent before. Nowadays, they use sattelites of course. But even before these sattelites were invented, the people still can draw maps of their country, and even the whole world which they thought was square! So, how did they know? Did they sail around the islands? Did they just use their imagination? How?

why does dickinson say that "hope is the thing with feathers" instead of just saying that hope is like a bird. What is the significance of feathers etc.

On A Christmas carol by Charles dickens the Marley's ghost tells scrooge that he will be visited by three ghost

(quotes from the book)

``Without their visits,'' said the Ghost, ``you cannot hope to shun the path I tread. Expect the first to-morrow, when the bell tolls One.''

``Couldn't I take 'em all at once, and have it over, Jacob?'' hinted Scrooge.

``Expect the second on the next night at the same hour. The third upon the next night when the last stroke of Twelve has ceased to vibrate. Look to see me no more; and look that, for your own sake, you remember what has passed between us."

But then how come when scrooge woke up after he had been visited by the ghost of christmas yet to come he woke on christmas day?I don't get it...can you explain this to me?

I forgot whether my teacher said it was safe for just dishwasher or whether it's microwave safe too.
We used a high-fire clay, and heated at temperatures that the teacher said would've ruined the Raku glazes...that's pretty much all the info I can remember. I was going to give my Grandma a mug for Christmas, but it just occured to me she makes instant coffee by heating it in the microwave.

Okay, here it is. When the 6th book first came out I of course read it. When I was finished I started thinking about what I had read (which is obviously something people do after reading a book). You know at the end, when Dumbledore has died and Harry opens the horcrux and there is a note in it from R.B? Well, the only person I could think of with those initials was Sirius's brother Regulus (I don't know if that is spelled correctly) Black. Then I remembered in the 5th book, when the Weasley's and Harry and Sirius were cleaning the Order of the Phoenix how they found a locket that nobody could open.......do you think that it is the real horcrux?

Sorry if this is old news and somebody has already thought of it.......
