How does CGI find the horizon in a picture?

I watced a BBC documentary where the put the buildings back in Auschwitz. How do they find the horizon to line them up?

by thier perspective points from photographs,they simply look at an old photograph and line up the old building using permanent landmarks which gives them the point of origin of the picture. landmarks such as bridges hills etc.
