How would you Define freedom? Who has given us Freedom and why have they or whay are they doing it? Can we put a price on Freedom? How important is Freedom to you, what would you do for it? what symbols do you think represent Freedom? Where would we be today if we didn't have the Freedoms we have?

A laughable question i guess, but it seems a question that should warrent a scientific response. Think the obvious films like Matrix, Sixth sense, others, and the truman show. They all deal with a general theme that seems quite outlandish and fantasy like. But the simple facts make many people wonder the same thing. How can we prove the world is real? It simple to say "well pinch yourself and see if you feel it, or touch a tree and see if it seems real, but what if all these scensations were programmed reponses? and in reality we are indeed machines that funtion by the same principles as other machines, they require a power source, fuel etc ..

So back to the original question, how do we scientifically once and for all prove one way or another that what we see, touch, smell, feel and taste is indeed real?

i grew up my whole life reading. thats how i got most of my education and culture, even if i was just reading fiction. people need to read a bit of fantasy from time to time, no? this is where i got my amazing imagination from :). so do you think its fair for people to penalize others for reading fiction?? i mean, we cant all by encyclopedias, and thats where were heading if we read only history!

I'm trying to remember a short story about a teenaged boy who was pressured by his church to convert or be baptized or be born again--and the experienced actually destroyed his faith. Does anyone remember this story, and can you find it on the web? It may have been written by James Baldwin, or Langston Hughes, or Richard Wright.

Canada had aquired it from grave robbers and then gave it to a society in the U.S. Yep, when scientists found out that it did indeed belong to at least an Egyptian King the US gave it back to Egypt. We're not so bad after all are we?

Admittedly we still have 95% of the 21st century left to go, but the first five years have been really discouraging.

ALthough I realise Marcuse was talking more on Marxist theory, it would appear that he and the movement he was part of had postulations aimed at stopping societies entropy.
Where theology is interesting, political and social theorists / philosophers acknowledged a more practical route for our hopes of society.
Nowadays we have Bradbury's Farenheight 451 coming true all around our reality obsessed world where the one dimensional man who desires 'fame' seems omnipresent.
Are there thinkers out there writing now postulating suggestions ?
A bibliography or pointers would be a great start.........

I understand I'd need to sew a hem for the background support, and that I'd need heavy material, but what other benefits are there? It seems so much cheaper to buy something from a craft store. Thanks for your answers.

What i've found is that everyone has a certain craving for drama in their life. Everyone, at least subconciously, tries to start something or is attracted to something that, ultimately, is not good, healthy, or conducive to a peaceful life. For example, telling someone something that you KNOW will make them angry, and doing it anyway. A vauge example, but hopefully some great thinkers can post insightful answers to this question.

Are we just attracted to bad things? Is it possible to live in a truly drama-free, peaceful life?

A friend of mine is a professor, and surprised me when he said that there is no such thing as individuality! I said of course there is, but when asked to prove it I couldn't without relating to something or someone else (his proof). Help me out folks. I need a solid argument here.
