I plan to enter a liberal arts college as a History Major within the next year. In preparation, I would like to read a list of books considered the "classic" or essential historical study books, preferably books that would commonly be assigned in college. My specific interest is in Modern European history.

I was homeschooled in high school so I never had AP classes or many prescribed history books.

The book list can consist of any era- classical/Roman/Greek- "Modern". Would prefer the recommendations to be books from "well-known" historians (not quite sure who they are yet!) and mostly non-fiction. I've read probably all the historical fiction there is :-).

Due to musical software and midi connections i want to add to my computer, i need to upgrade to xp home, professional, or vista since there are no supported drivers for my xp media center edition. if i were to upgrade, would all of my existing files (word docs, mp3s, etc.) get wiped out?

Here in Australia - companies are not allowed to advertise smoking on tv. But they can advertise alcohol on tv.

Why is smoking portrayed as so disgusting, when alcohol is also really bad for you.

On our packets of cigarettes here they have statistics about how many people die from smoking - Do you think they should put the same on alcohol bottles?

Why is there such a big difference? Because there would be a big uproar if anything was done about alcohol?
