Here in Australia - companies are not allowed to advertise smoking on tv. But they can advertise alcohol on tv.
Why is smoking portrayed as so disgusting, when alcohol is also really bad for you.
On our packets of cigarettes here they have statistics about how many people die from smoking - Do you think they should put the same on alcohol bottles?
Why is there such a big difference? Because there would be a big uproar if anything was done about alcohol?

Here in Aus, we can drink when we're 18. Most people start younger.

Alcohol has effects on other people - an emotional effect. Smoking has a physical effect on other people - they are both bad!

You can drink responsibly (most can anyway). There have been many studies that show some positive effects of moderate alcohol consumption. In moderation, there is little negative effect re alcohol.
The same cannot be said of tobacco.
As to the type of advertising, the alcohol companies in my country clearly are in the wrong. Everything from the message to the audience targetted by some advertising is indefensible.
Now stop giving me thumbs down :)
Peace

Your right. If someone wants alcohol they will get it, no matter how old they are. I personally don't have a problem with the age being raised to 21. But at the same time, any one who serves in the Military should be aloud to have a beer when they are not on duty. If you are old enough to die for the country then darn it you should be old enough to enjoy each and every right that any adult enjoys. If you aren't old enough to drink then you aren't old enough to die. We need to decide if 18 is old enough to be an adult period. Who decided that 18 was the magic age of adulthood anyway? We go back and forth in the USA all the time. You can vote at 18, you can get married at 18, if you commit a crime as a child you can be held as a juvie until the age of 21. You can't hold a full drivers license in some states until you are 18 or 21. And in most states you can't drink until the age of 21. But you can join the military at 18. We, as usual, send mixed messages to our kids...18 or 21 it really isn't many years, but the amount most people mature between the two is great. We need to set national standards and be done with all the questions and second-guessing ourselves for a change.

If used in moderation with responsibility, (and there's the two key words here boys and girls) alcohol can be enjoyed with little to no worries and no risk of addiction.
Tobacco will kill you. You are inhaling toxins designed to make your body addicted to a product containing cancerous ingredients.
You can tell me alcohol is bad all you want but you can't convince me it's bad or as disgusting as smoking is.

Same here in the USA. The tobacco companies have been paying huge judgements against them to all the states-the states use the money for stupid things like financing arts.
They can still advertise booze.

Anything in excess is bad for you. However, smoking not only affects you, but everyone in your immediate vicinity. I'm sick and tired of having to give smokers a wide berth when my kids are with me. You want to kill yourself - fine, but don't drag everyone else down with you.
Some alcohol (namely red wine) has been proven to be beneficial in small amounts - can't say smoking has the same effect.

Smoking just stinks! A little alcohol in moderation is actually good for you, but smoking just kills. Actually, a smoker who smokes a even just one cigarette gets more radiological dose to their body than most workers at a DOE nuclear site
