On the tube this morning, I saw a poster from a well-known charity appealing for funds. On the poster, it said:

'Without your help, we can do nothing'.

I thought about this and, to me, it didn't seem to make sense.

'We can do' is a pro-active statement, of positive action, but 'nothing' is a negative, nothingness, which sort of annuls the pro-active action. How can you pro-actively do something negative?

Surely it should be, 'We can't do anything'?

What are the grammatical rules about this? I would equate it to maths - if you multiply a number by 0, the answer always equals 0. So, if you are pro-actively doing 'nothing', it cancels it out.

Whereas, 'anything' is a positive value (i.e. it's a tangible something), which 'we can't do'. So, 'we can't do anything' is grammatically correct, whereas 'we can do nothing' isn't.

What's the correct answer? Is there one? Does my question even make sense?

Im doing a documentary video on "How I Am Part of the Hip Hop Subculture". My video will revolve and play off of the 4 elements of Hip Hop; Break Dancing, MCing, DJing, and Graffiti. I have three of the elements but i need someone who does Graffiti. The Graffiti section of the video will consist of an interview and then the artist spraypainting a small area. If you are at all interested in being in the video i would deeply appreciate it if you would contact me through my email. Just so you know i have 2 weeks max to record all the footage and edit so the sooner the better. Thanks.

This man I see in a professional capacity acts weird around me. He's really lovely but struggles to maintain eye contact longer than a few seconds before looking away and stuttering. He seems really nervous. We get on famously and talk about normal stuff more than what I normally see him about. He falls over himself to help me but just keeps stuttering and looking foolish! Very sweet really but it seems a bit strange. He isn't like this when talking to other people, just me. Is it me - am I intimidating?

My coworker has important documents in PDF form and she switched to a laptop and since then has had problems only opening a few out of several hundred PDFs. Most of them open fine, with all the data and information she would expect in there, and then there are a small number that open up with several pages that are absolutely blank. Has anyone else seen this and do you know how to fix it?
