San Diego

When I moved to San Diego four years ago for school I thought it was an awesome place (excluding the cost of real estate of course). But the longer I am here the more unsettled I feel. It feels like there is no root here. Does anybody else feel this way or can anybody else describe this?

My brother and I are both college students moving to San Diego.. My school is going to be in the downtown area, and my brother will be going to school in Vista... Are there any safe places for us to rent a reasonable apartment? I was thinking Escondido but do not know if it is safe.... We just need some advices on towns that are nice, and within a 30minute drive of both places.. thanks

my husband and i are chicago natives and have spent a few years living/working in NYC, but we've had enough of the cold weather and want to move west---specifically to the san diego area.

with that said, i'm looking for some advice on where to look specifically (downtown vs. northern, etc), and what we can expect to get for our money.

for context, i'm 29, he's 31 and were looking to start a family in a year so. however, we're not suburban folks---we love city life and what has to offer. we're big fans of being able to walk out our front door and have restaurants, shops, and folks enjoying the days/evenings. while we don't want to be surrounded by just-out-of-college kids, we also don't want to be stuck in a cul-de-sac per say. but we do want to be cognizant of schools in the area, crime, etc.

would love to be closer to the ocean than not, near restaurants, shops, things to do....any suggestions or areas we should consider? any articles, books, you can point us to?

I go to USD and I usually play at their gym. But its not open at night anymore due to intramural games. I want to satisfy my basketball jones and I need a park where I can continue to play. Usually play at night during the week so looking for some good lighted courts where I can get in on some 5 on 5.

A friend and I are going to San Diego in two weeks, and Im wondering if we should rent a car. I know that there is a transit system but we are planning on going to and from La Jolla and other outskirts of the city. Should we?! Its not too costly, plus we arnt sure how long we will be at each spot and not sure we are going to want a taxi to stay and wait for us. Any ideas?! Is it too crazy for out of state drivers to be driving around?!

what are the safe areas to live in downtown San Diego since I do not have a car and don't want to buy one as long as the grocery and shopping is close by? are there any websites to find a room- mate ?
