My brother and I are both college students moving to San Diego.. My school is going to be in the downtown area, and my brother will be going to school in Vista... Are there any safe places for us to rent a reasonable apartment? I was thinking Escondido but do not know if it is safe.... We just need some advices on towns that are nice, and within a 30minute drive of both places.. thanks

My recommendation for where to live is Mira Mesa. If you look at a map of San Diego you will see that the major freeways kind of surround the area, so it's easy to get either north or south from there. There are a lot of apartments and it's a nice area of town.

I lived in Mira Mesa and worked in Carlsbad (to the southwest of Vista) and my husband worked in the downtown area. He left early enough that he missed the traffic heading into the downtown area and I was traveling the opposite direction from most of the traffic. So it was a perfect plact to live.

Del Mar, Pacific Beach are good places to live, but Del Mar is more expensive and PB has horrible traffic most of the time. Carmel Valley is an option, but it's close to the freeway noise for the most part. I wouldn't live in escondido if you're trying to commute to downtown. It's far easier to travel north in the morning than south.

Escondido is the most reasonably priced, but make sure you really check out the area. Not all areas are safe. North Broadway (one of the main roads in Esco) has some good apartments. Anything on Mission, Lincoln, Washington are kind of scary. So just be careful.

San Marcos has quite a few apts but I think they are pretty pricey. It's worth looking into though.

Anywhere else will be more expensive.

Wish you luck with your move!! SD is a great place. You're going to love it.

No, don't move to Escondido. I grew up in Del Mar and then moved to Rancho Santa Fe. If you are looking for reasonable places that's in between North County and Downtown, I recommend Pacific Beach, Del Mar, or Carmel Valley. They aren't too expensive. Good luck!
