My child will be living at USC for a summer seminar. Movies and television have glamorized the gang and street racing so much, I don't know if it is true or hollywood? Is this a dangerous area? What should I warn my child about?

This question is for any city, not just Los Angeles, where I live.

I love the fact that people will exercise every morning, running, walking or whatever, but they will drive around the block 16 times to get a parking space in front of a restaurant.

I love the fact that flip flops and bandanas are standard wardrobe items.

I love evergreen forests, redwoods, pines, that sort of thing, but I live here in Los Angeles and I'm surrounded by desert... nothing wrong with desert but I sure miss the pines. I want to get away for only a weekend, so I don't have time to go far. Where do you suggest I go.

Also, when you camp, what do you pack? If anything unusual, why?

I'm traveling to Los Angeles and it would be easier if I could fly there and then rent a car.

I'm going from Ireland to Los Angeles in 3 weeks and it's my first hoilday in 10 years, I've never been outside of europe in my life.

I've read and heard a lot of stories that would put most people off going though LAX airport so I'm a bit worried about that. If anyone has any tips about making the hole thing easer and quicker it would really help.

I'd like to get "off the beaten path" somewhat...and see some cool sites. Old homes/mansions of the big stars of yesteryear etc. Are there any good WEBSITES etc...that can point me into the right direction? Or perhaps "you" are from that area....and have info to share for someone like me, from "smalltown America"...who wants to come check-out "movieland'?

I've heard that "Hollywood" can be disappointing..as it's some run-down, gross, prostitute/drug infested place now...(especially at night)...so I'd like to avoid that, of course.

What to see? Cool tours? I'd just LOVE to see where Doug Fairbanks/Mary Pickford or Charlie Chaplin lived/worked...etc.

Sure, I'd like to do the "studio tours" etc...but I'd really like to see some real "history" down there.

Thanks VERY much.

Hey everyone, thanks for taking the time to check out my question. Here's what I'm thinking:

My girlfriend and I are considering moving to California. We're in our mid-20s and are just getting our financial lives started, so I know our choices are going to be quite limited.

We don't want to live crammed in L.A. or any big city for that matter, but we want to live relatively close to a beach. Close enough to not have to drive a day to get there, but also distant enough to be affordable.

So, we'd like to find a small town (perhaps liberal arts college town? -- we want to be a part of living liberal culture) that 'orbits' a larger city --- (1 or 2 hours from a city)

Simply entertaining daydreams about the topic, I thought there might be such a place just north of all of the SoCal traffic and excitement --- somewhere to live where it's maybe a little out of the sun's path some of the time, thus less people would live there (?)

I would love to hear thoughts!!
