I love evergreen forests, redwoods, pines, that sort of thing, but I live here in Los Angeles and I'm surrounded by desert... nothing wrong with desert but I sure miss the pines. I want to get away for only a weekend, so I don't have time to go far. Where do you suggest I go.

Also, when you camp, what do you pack? If anything unusual, why?

You've GOT to go to the San Gorgonio Wilderness. It's beautiful! Just head east toward San Bernadino on the 10 and take the Orange Street exit in Redlands, head left on Orange Street, right on Lugonia Avenue (turns into Hwy 38) and up into Forrest Falls.

I would recommend the Vivian Creek Trail and camping at Vivian Creek camp, although if you are tough you could take it all the way to the peak (I've never done it!). At times, the trail is a little tough, but it's beautiful with great views, including some waterfalls. Have fun!

We went hiking couple weeks ago and find this lovely trail, Switzer. Even from downtown LA, you just need about 30 minutes to get there. Lots of trees, stream alone the way and there's even a waterfall and a pool. We didn't camp there but there's a camp site. Sorry I can't help with this part. You can check the links and there are more trails if you like to hike.
