I'd like to get "off the beaten path" somewhat...and see some cool sites. Old homes/mansions of the big stars of yesteryear etc. Are there any good WEBSITES etc...that can point me into the right direction? Or perhaps "you" are from that area....and have info to share for someone like me, from "smalltown America"...who wants to come check-out "movieland'?

I've heard that "Hollywood" can be disappointing..as it's some run-down, gross, prostitute/drug infested place now...(especially at night)...so I'd like to avoid that, of course.

What to see? Cool tours? I'd just LOVE to see where Doug Fairbanks/Mary Pickford or Charlie Chaplin lived/worked...etc.

Sure, I'd like to do the "studio tours" etc...but I'd really like to see some real "history" down there.

Thanks VERY much.

Hey star-struck,

I happen to be from the Pacific NorthWest myself, and living in Hollywood for the last few years. Hollywood has cleaned itself up a lot in the last few years, and whether it has anything to offer depends on your tastes. At night, it's primarily club scene, so if that's your thing, there's beautiful girls out looking to be "discovered" every night.
Not so much? In the afternoon, there's buses parked all along Hollywood blvd. waiting to take people on tours of Star's Homes if that's your thing. The Kodak theatre is worth checking out too, that's where they do the Oscars every year (I live 2 blocks from there and it's a zoo every time!). There's also the Wax museum, and Ripleys believe it or not. Also, on the corner of Hollywood and Orange, on the top floor of the Roosevelt, there's a museum in the room of the "unofficial mayor of Hollywood".
Don't trust websites. Best to talk to the tour operators when you get here. Start at Hollywood Blvd and Highland Ave, and head east. There's tour companies on both sides of the streets for several blocks. Just talk to them about what you want to see, and most of them will be pretty amiable about getting you there.
Don't overlook the history factor of the studio tours either, especially the Paramount Lot, and Warner Bros.
When your brain gets tired from learning new things, there's sandy beaches (not rocky like back home, you can actually take your shoes off!), mountains, and deserts all within a couple hours drive.
Have a great vacation, I hope you have a lot of fun!

well Hollywood is everything you've heard plus much more, it's dull, and boring but than again i used to go there everyday cause i used to go to Hollywood high school, anyway if you wanna check out the whole movieland experience, go to Burbank where everything is actually filmed or check out the San Fernando Valley (where i'm from) and you can almost always catch movies being filmed on the streets. good luck.
