My child will be living at USC for a summer seminar. Movies and television have glamorized the gang and street racing so much, I don't know if it is true or hollywood? Is this a dangerous area? What should I warn my child about?

I am a current undergrad at USC, the area surrounding the school is not the safest area. But from the south central L.A. location that is a given. That being said, on campus is definitely safer than off campus and there is frequent patrol by the local DPS on an off campus but they can't stop every single crime but I believe they do a good job. Mostly I would tell your student to just be aware and cautious when walking in the surrounding neighborhood alone and to use available resources for safe rides at nite through the school. The USC local Department of Public Safety has statistics online on the types of crimes in the area, if you search USC DPS you should be able to get to their site for that information. I hope this helps

Yes the neighborhood surrounding the campus can be very dangerous especially at night. Don't go out alone. If your child stays on campus and with groups they will be fine and have a great experience.

USC is a gated campus. The surrounding areas are relatively safe at night, as long as they are campus businesses with students frequenting them. Just do NOT go outside of the USC area. It gets pretty nasty.

I've heard it is a rough neighborhood. If you child is staying on campus, tell him/her never to leave campus alone. Never be alone period.
