I'm considering doing a charity abseil but I've always wondered how it is that you don't just fall straight to the gound when abseiling? I know to a certain extent you control the speed at which you go down but is the speed of descent primarily managed by someone at the top?

I'm not sure of the spelling, but you get the idea. I have a little Ruko pocket knife that I take camping with me. The top part of the blade is normal smooth, but the bottom half is serrated. Would I sharpen it as a normal kitchen knife on a sharpening stone?

I am not referring to caliber, but rather the way that the casing is designed.

I recently got into camping as an adult. My family wasn't the outdoors type though I love it. We take a propane burner and a grill. I have trouble coming up with side dishes to make with meals. So far we have only done corn on the cob on the grill. While I do love it I need some variety. What are some techniques I can use to cook other stuff on the grill? Also what are some recipes people use? Also any websites people can recommend that I can look on would be great.

We have very basic equipment. We bring frying pans and a tea kettle as well as utensils. We are slowly building up our equipment but so far we only have the basics.

I love to climb trees and have been doing a lot of tree work lately. It seems that everytime i get up around 40-50 feet i get really nervous and climb slow and possibly make more mistakes that when i am confident on the ground. Does anyone have advice for getting over the fear of heights or to make this easier. Thanks

I go out for walks but not rambles.

Is a walk on a Sunday afternoon after dinner any different to a ramble on the same afternoon?

What is the difference between the two? Is it distance? Difference in clothing? Or just the person saying I think ill go for a walk/ramble?

Hello!
I'm considering taking a job as an armed security guard to scrape together enough cash to go back to school. I'm familiar with firearms, the different actions, and calibers. However, I wanted some more imput from everyone out there. What would you choose as your preferred sidearm as a security guard? I've ruled out the .50AE Desert Eagle due to weight and over-penetration issues so don't go there. Here is what I have given serious consideration to:
Ruger GP 101 .357 Magnum
Berestta 92f (9mm) OR 96f (.40 S&W)
Glock 17 (9mm) or 22 (.40 S&W)
some 1911-style

I thought of the wheel gun because of it's reliability and simplicity of usage, though I've shot all of the other guns mentioned here.
I'm somewhat concerned with the 9mm round though. Do you think that this is still an effective man-stopper, or should I concentrate on a .40 S&W on up? Any other suggestions welcomed. Later!
