My brother and I use a simple double loop through a D-ring carabiner, and a Gibbs ascender to lock in place. It'll still wear your rope, but not as quickly as repeated knot tying.

I would recommend buying some 8mm cord and learning the Prussik knot. you can still go up/down the rope, but the knot will slide and absorb shock if you fall. A cam device (like the Gibbs), or a toothed acender (like the Jumar) can cut through your rope if shock loaded. If you need to get an acender/decender I would look at the products made by CMI. Great company and the equipment they sell is as close to bomb proof as I have seen.

For harness / rope / belay gadget you decide on someplace greater to anchor it. solid luck with a tree. regrettably, i don't think of you will stumble on a superb form of the right thank you to make clmbing timber lots safer. in the event that they choose to climb, take them to an indoor mountaineering fitness center. EDIT: I think of you're being sarcastic alongside with your edit. i'm going to declare this - young infants at the instant are not stupid. additionally, in case you upload protection measures, they might do riskier strikes because of the fact "whats up, i've got have been given a helmet on suitable?". Indoor mountaineering is amazingly secure. i've got on no account heard of a demise or important harm.
