I am not referring to caliber, but rather the way that the casing is designed.

Bound's hubby here:

As the rounds come out of the box, they are not interchangable. That being said, the 9mm Luger round can be placed on half moon clips and fired in a revolver whose cylinder is cut to accept half moon clips. The .45 ACP can be placed on half moon clips and fired in revolvers chambered for the .45 auto rim.

In the 1990's before Colt went belly up they manufactured a variation of the Colt "Commando" that chambered a number of semi-automatic and revolver cartridges in the same cylinder (almost 30 different chamberings). This particular model of revolver could be quite useful to the person shooting a number of different 9mm/.38 special type cartridges.

Other than this, the majority of the revolvers require rimmed cartridge cases. The exception to this statement would be the Ruger Blackhawk revolvers. The .38/.357 and .45 Long Colt revolvers can be purchased with an additional cylinder that allows the shooter to fire 9mm and .45 ACP cartridges in their respective revolver.

Hope this answers your question. Good luck.

The simple answer is, other than the ubiquitous .22, NO. Go to an ammo website like Winchester or Federal or Remington and you can see the difference at the base of the casing. That difference has nothing to do with the performance of the round. It has to do with how the empties are extracted from the chamber. That deep groove at the base of the pistol ammo allows for an aggressive extractor to pull the empty out of the chamber violently, as part of the firing process. The rim on the revolver round holds it in place and allows it to be push out latter, long after the the round is fired So, by and large, the rounds are in no way interchangeable.

That said, some weapons manufacturers have made limited numbers of guns or adaptors that allow one type of round to be used in a weapon not typically desgined for that type of round. Moon clips have been mentioned that allow rounds desgined for pistols to be used in a similarly chambered revolver. Most of the weapons are pistols that have modified chambers and extractors to allow revolver ammo as their round. What you won't find is a pistol that will shoot both pistol ammo and revolver ammo interchangably. Using moon clips you can switch back and forth on ammo when using a revolver.

One problem that is run into is that making an automatic pistol heavy enough to handle some of the revolver rounds makes the gun prohibitively large.

The casing is the same for semi and revolvers. You have to go by the caliber that is made for the gun. The military use to make the ammo interchangeable so on the battlefield if you run out of ammo you can pick up anyone rifle or ammo with the same caliber and use it. A good example is a 22. the auto and the revolver use the same ammo.

For the majority, No they are not interchangeable. However there are a few that the semi-rimmed cartridge will work in a revolver. There are also adapter 1/2 moon clips that will permit some automatic cartridges to work in a revolver.

Revolver cartridges don't interchange in to automatics, except for one or two high quailty brands of guns.

Please note, I am not discussing .22 rim fire ammunition, but centerfire.

I will not get into the specifics of what is and is not interchangeable. Due to the fact that I don't know your nature or intent of gun ownership.

No they are not...
There are a few exceptions though...
IE there are a few .357 semi auto pistols that take revolver rounds. The Desert eagle is one of them.
And there are a few revolvers that shoot semi auto rounds like the .40S&W, but you have to use moon clips to hold in the rounds.
