in particular wooden arrows I know there is weight placed on the arrow shaft and some sort of deflection is measured but what is the exact specifications of the procedure? How much weight, what location of the shaft etc

I'm not certain about wooden shafts, however in aluminum and carbon the weight is measured in grams per inch. The deflection depends on the diameter, thickness, and length of the arrow and there is a formula used to figure this... It's printed on the sides of the box that arrows come in. It basically tells you if you're shooting a certain draw weight, with a certain length arrow, then you have to use a specific diameter and weight to offset the deflection. Sorry I don't know the formula, and the guy at my bow shop doesn't know it either...
