I'm looking to get started within the next year or so. What are the first steps, what do I need to do to prepare myself, what are the risks and how can I become a very skilled climber?

I've got this block of granite thats been calling out to me since I first saw it, and upon closer inspection, I found some anchors. Personally I don't drive pit's, but it's smooth, tall and there are no cracks, just friction and smear. It can be top roped, but I can't talk anyone into climbing it. Any thoughts ?

Thanks in advance,

Hello fellow rockeneers, any of you guys ever been to El Chorro? What's the rock like? Is it polished? Rough? I'm going there for ten days this January with a group of friends. What are the chances I'll be climbing in a tshirt and shorts?

Mountain hiking has become a particular love of mine and I would love to gradually work up to mountain climbing. But I am afraid of lightening. What happens when you are roped up on some wall and it begins to lighten? Is a climber likely to get hit? What can one do to avoid the risk? (Besides just climbing in winter...)

This summer I plan to go on a trip across the state of colorado. Using the national forest I plan to hike from Rio grande forest, on the border of new mexico, to the Roosevelt forest, to the Wyoming border. All of the trip will be through mountains. What should take, It has to be able to fit in a backpack. I want to keep electonics to minimum except a video camera, and I am debating a lighter. What should I take?

I'm mad into rock climbing and would like to do nothing else. I'm in college but hating it. The thing about going and being a bum or a hippie is you need others that have the same interests as you, but the only people I know that like to do nothing are acid freaks. Where are there people that just climb rock and do enough work to keep food in thier belly?

I haven't climbed in years but I found my old Chournard harness and the rest of my gear in the back of my closet...
It's been dry, warm and visually looks ok, and I can't say as though I fell more than once while using it. I need some liability free advise here, use it or replace it ?

Well, Mount Everest is considered the highest mountain, but the foot (the "base camp") is at 5,500 meters height, so there is really only 3,348 meters left to climb. Honestly, can you tell how difficult a mountain is to climb by just looking at it's "height"? Which do you think is the most difficult mountain to climb?

i love to be outside all the time, and I really, really love climbing mountains. what major should i choose if i like this? i am puzzled ... usually rock climbing and mountaineering is recreational, not occupational. i also want to travel alot, too. i wouldn't want to get stuck working at a national park or something for years and years.

I'm interested in doing this some time soon, but I don't really have any experience. In the past year I've done a bit of bouldering here and there, and have used climbing walls a bit, but never anything significant, just very basic stuff.

Any advice on doing so? Any advice on what I should do before hand?

Thanks

With the death toll already reaching over 140 deaths to occur to climbers attempting to reach the summit and rescruers and the fact the enviromental future is uncertain for the Everest area I now see that there is a race to be the oldest to sumit the deadly mountain. Why don't they close the mountain to climbers and save individuals from a sure death? 70+ year old individuals climbing Mount Everest should be allowed?
