I'm interested in doing this some time soon, but I don't really have any experience. In the past year I've done a bit of bouldering here and there, and have used climbing walls a bit, but never anything significant, just very basic stuff.

Any advice on doing so? Any advice on what I should do before hand?

Thanks

from those I have talked to who have "hiked" it I gather that in terms of technical challange it is not difficult, that is for a person in good physical shape.

There's a groomed trail right to the top. Its more about fitness than technical ability. There are no technical bits, its just a matter of walking up a steep grade for a long time. Its worth it though. I would suggest going early in the morning because the morning fogs make it more mysterious and beautiful and the trail gets crowded.

So yes, a complete novice could do it but I would make sure that you have at least average or perhaps slightly better than average cardio fitness.

P.S. - You'll only need finger fitness if you plan on picking your nose while you climb.

Even children have made the Pony Track route up Ben Nevis. It's about 9 miles long and 4,400 feet from the bottom to the top. The danger lies in losing your way in bad weather, and then falling off one of the cliffs of Ben Nevis because of poor visibility. Be in good shape, keep a clear head, and pay attention to where you're going and don't lose track of the trail on your way back. Allow most of the day to make the round trip. Check the weather and bring warm clothes and a flashlight in case you have to spent a night up there. Best bet is to go with an experienced partner.

Just take the path. It takes about 3-4 hours to get to the top.
