This summer I plan to go on a trip across the state of colorado. Using the national forest I plan to hike from Rio grande forest, on the border of new mexico, to the Roosevelt forest, to the Wyoming border. All of the trip will be through mountains. What should take, It has to be able to fit in a backpack. I want to keep electonics to minimum except a video camera, and I am debating a lighter. What should I take?

Well a couple of friends would be a good idea. Bring one set of waterproof(goretex pack lites) clothes. One pair of waterproof boots with ankle support. One set of thermal clothes, with an extra fleece. A sleeping bag. A survival bag, thermal blanket, whistle, and first aid kit. Some wash gear. A few, like five or six pairs of underwear and socks, prefferably not cotton. A couple of sports microfibre towles. A sleeping bag(it can be low tog if it's summer). Compass, map case, lighter, light my fire flint and striker. A lot of water, a water filter and some sterilisation tablets for if you need to drink river water or something. A load of dehydrated food. A block of marzipan(for if you run out of food and need energy as a last resort). A torch, head torch is best. A few toilet rolls, rob one from a bus station or college cause they are the most densly packed. A tent, a ground mat(therma rest are the best cause they're the most comfy, keep you warm and pack nice and small). Camping stove and enough gas. A mobile phone. Some strong waterproof tape incase you get any tears in your bag or anything. If a fog horn would be a good idea if there's going to be bears. Some black plastick sacks, one to line your back pack to make sure your stuff stays dry. A knife, sharp and with a sheath or folding capability. Insect repellant. Shots for mosquitos or whatever else might be in the area. A pack of cards. A few nylon or polyester tshirts and shorts.

What you should take with you is knowledge and training.

I'd advise no electronics. A very good knife, and a spare both with locking blades. At least 4 lighters.

Give me more details about this trip as well as your age experience formal training and travel companions. Definitely a good first aid kit the knowledge of how to use it.

Give me as info as you can and I can prepare instructions similar to written orders I would give if sending troops on such an adventure. Here in Canada we call it Adventure Training.

I would definitely take some of those food bars with you, a coat for if you get cold, good walking shoes, maybe even a hat, sunglasses, water, bug spray, change of clothes, a compass, a map, your cell phone might not even be a bad idea in case you get lost.

Look in your bookstore for some hiking guides. They should help a lot - and if you're going alone, definitely alert family where you will be and how long.

Have fun!

Have you ever backpacked before?

Maybe you should get a book about backpacking and some field guides for the Colorado Rockies. It wouldn't hurt to spend some time on the US Forset Service web pages for those forests. They'll be more useful to you than whatever jackass answers you get on Yahoo Answers.

I would take a cell phone in case of a severe problem. You should also study up on adventures that your planing to take. A lot of strange things can happen to you that you didn't plan on. Don't forget to give somebody your itinerary. Also make sure you plan on adverse weather, worm clothing and emergency food products. Don't forget to take along some kind of personal protection and I don't mean condoms.

How about a blow up doll? It can function as a air mattress for sleeping, companionship at night, and come to your rescue if you run into the mountain men from "Deliverance". If you roll it tight enough it doesn't take up much room.

Most important thing to take is good time, just have fun, and experience the beauty of nature and the magnificence of God's creation.

If you're planning this trip you know what to take physically. Mentally, take yourself! Enjoy the journey and everything you see on your way.
