$12 should get you enough webbing and a carabiner to make a Swiss Seat harness yourself.

The Black Diamond Bod harness is about the cheapest harness of good quality you are going to find. Save up the additional $6..it's worth it.

AVOID (!!!) buying used equipment like harnesses and ropes. You don't know the history of it and your life depends on it.

Go to your local climbing gym and ask for any harnesses that are nearing retirement. They will be incredibly uncomfortable, useless and dangerous, but presumably that is what you are looking for.

Just make sure you get the right harness for you, for instance for sport climbing a light harness with less gear loops, an adjustable harness for mountaineering etc.

Good Luck!

Here's a tip. Your climbing gear should be the best you can afford. You are trusting your life with this gear. You can usually find a last years model at a discounted price and your not sacrificing price for quality.

To correctly answer your question, I agree with the above poster who said to tie a swiss seat with webbing.

That said... you don't want that!! Keep saving..
