I am 6 ' 240lbs. I want to be a police officer and am interested in learning some effective techniques. I would like to know what would be better to learn for this, aikido or jujitsu (japanese or brazilian) or some other form of martial art.. I know I need to get in shape, but my main purpose of this question is not physical fitness, but self defense.

Are there any online or book sources that deal with how to fight with maces, spears, and axes instead of the usual sword fighting things? I'm thinking European Middle Ages.

can anyone recommend a good form of martial arts that teached discipline and defense mostly as well as a little of offense. I have a 5 and 11 year old that I would like to get them into, both girls, my son is to small still. Mostly for the 5 year old as she is small in size, (weight) and from experience she will get teased alot so I want her to be able to defend herself against bigger kids if need be, not to be aggressive though.

I'm 6'1" and weigh about 190 lbs and have an average build. I am not particulary in shape but at the same time I'm not horribly out of shape. Anyway my question is I am currently 20 years old and I have never been in a serious physical fight. I am starting to run across situations where I am needing to at times resort to preparing for a fight to keep me from looking like a coward but since I have no fighting experience I have very little confidence in myself. I was wondering if someone could would suggest a fighting style to look into training in. I am not looking at becoming a billy badass or anything just that if I were to get in a fight with someone not only would I be able to defend myself but I would be able to cause enough injury to end the fight. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes, I beat him up with the Nunchuck. I broke his nose and bruised up his body. I'm only 5'10... And the guy was about 6'4.

I'm training in MMA and last night during submission grappling, I took several knee shots to the head and the back of the head. I wasn't wearing protective head gear. Today, I'm a little woozy but I just want to come back for more. My juices were flowing and loved the action. I can't seem to get enough. Is this weird? Who else loves this stuff ... maybe a little too much like me? Kaia!!!!

My son is a student of Martial Arts school. He is 16 A few weeks ago he won two first places in a tournament (2nd ANNUAL CARBONDALE INTERNATIONAL OPEN MARTIAL ARTS CLASSIC). He won first place for point sparring and first place for Olympic stile sparring. As one of the champions he became a member of U.S. National Martial Arts Team and was qualified to compete in Honolulu (Hawaii) in October. If he gets 1st, 2nd or 3rd place he will be qualified for the Olympic Games in 2008 which will be held in China. His instructors are confident if he keeps training the way he is training right now he will get a qualifying place for the Olympic Games in 2008. to sent him to Hawaii to the next tournament I have to raise great deal of money. Tell me how I can find finasial help for him. Some organisations? Please be practica! I alredy have alot of advices from my friends what doesn't work and I spend a lot of time with no result. I was thinking about taking a karate class but I am uncomfortable walking around barefoot. Does being barefoot in the class serve a purpose? If so I would rather comply with the study of the art. Why is this the case?
