After the success of my last question about initials used on the internet I thought I'd find out what this one means (it's much harder to guess than "lol" which I could have figured out if I cared enough to try!)

Recently went to McDonalds for chow, heck I'm the only person who speaks straight English in there... MIRA... I'm not even American... I'm Asian! Heck! the trouble they made us go through with immigration to make sure we speak English right, and America is full of so called "Americans" who can't speak a thing in English! Bah! Only in this ONE I support George Bush!

Hello, i've been learning a language since college. after graduation i still study it from time to time.. im forgetting some i haven't seriously studied in some time now but i still have it. And i plan to review it again and learn more vocabs. But i ask myself , if i never meet the people of that country, never see them, never run into them, so what's the point? Like in highschool i studied french, but there is no french people anywhere so if i was still good, i could never use it. the language now is japanese, and i neeeeever meet these people. in fact ESL students meet more japanese than i would ever, cause they are with them in classes,. . so, is there benefits for me to keep studying if i'm never using it with other people, and i'm never going plan on traveling to countries where it is used? Perhaps at least something in my brain would improve? to be smarter in general? idon't know. help

No, not a frequency list of letters, but of _phonemes_: the schwa sound, the /sh/ sound, the /ch/ sound, and all the different vowel sounds, etc. There are between 40 and 45 of these in English. Do we have a linguist in the house?

I have very little knowledge and a lot of confusion about this topic. Why is Aramaic so similar to modern-day Arabic? Why did Jesus, a Jew, speak Aramaic? When did the Jews start speaking Hebrew?

Please, only scholarly replies. Thanks

About when did the split between British English and American English take place? What area of the U.K. had the most influence on American pronunciation today?

And in Spain, for example, does spam come in Spanish? Just wondering how the spammers know who knows where and what language to put their junk-emails into. All of mine comes in English.

I speak English and French fluently, and a little Spanish, and some basic American Sign Language. I can count, ask costs, and purchase basic foods and beer in German and Japanese - military brat, what can I say? My sister's Spanish is excellent, and I have a friend fluent in Japanese. So, the plan is that this baby will be exposed to as many languages as possible.

I would like, then, to get some good children's primers in those languages. In addition, I know it's peculiar, but I am looking for a children's Latin primer and some basic materials in Old English. Any suggestions would be very welcome- there are a lot of primers out there, but I want to use the clearest and most accurate!

I would greatly appreciate it of someone could translate "And the rythym still goes on" into latin for me. My dad just died recently and I want to get a tattoo with that in latin. My dad was a drummer and that's a line from a Bayside song that talks about their drummer who died and it fits really well. I understand it won't be a perfect translation, 'cause languages don't have that common voice between them., but just something along those lines would be fantastic.

Thanks!
Daniel
