About when did the split between British English and American English take place? What area of the U.K. had the most influence on American pronunciation today?

Good question. The different colonies had different accents just as in Britain today there are regions and locales with distinct accents.

In the 20th century, there lived on a remote island in the Chesapeake Bay a population whose English was heavily accented in what many scholars argued was as close to the Colonial English as anything.

I think the accent would definately be different today. After all
we are so world traveled and people move from here to there.
We are all speaking more alike than ever before.
