I find it hard understanding why African Americans are called African Americans and Latin Americans are called Latin Americans when they are all just American.
Im from Australia with a Greek background and Ive never been called a Greek Australian, even though we have Africans migrating here we dont call them African Australians.
Once we are here, this is our home whether we were born here or migrated. We are all Australian no matter where we come from.
So why does America separate people by their colour, when they are all Americans?

...Welsh and English people? (I'm looking for slang terms here, such as 'Jimmy' and 'Paddy', not the proper terms.)

And please also tell if the terms are derogatory or not. (I don't care, I'm just trying to educate myself about a few cultural and language differences).

In United States, English may be referred to with these slangs: John Bull; blue-blood or blue-blooded. These slangs are usually never used in derogatory or unflattering fashion, and are often used as terms of endearment. On the few occasions that I have heard them used in a derogatory manner, there has been little or no sting in them.

Same thig goes for the U.S. slangs for Irish--all I can think of right now is 'Mick' and the less popular 'Paddy'.

I can't think of a U.S. slang for Scots.

Thanks.

Why do some have the former and not the latter and vice versa?

Just wondering if these behavioral natures are genetic or influenced by culture, upbringing, socialization, etc., or maybe a combination of both.

Your thoughts?

Me? This past weekend, I was flipping thru channels and I saw a commercial on Univision (hispanic people will know) and there was a talk show clip of the children of the illegals that are getting deported. Well these kids were crying that they want to see their parents. It was sad. Cuz they have a life here. Most of them this is all they know. And no, Im not being all pro immigrantion or anything it was just really sad to me. Just the commercial made me cry. Forget watching the show I'd be a mess. So when did you last cry?

The other day I attended a meeting of a local agriculture group that was entertaining a group of male Greek farmers who are on some type of tour in the US. Because of the time of year, most of the farmers here are in the fields harvesting so they sent thier wives so the majority of the people there were female of various ages. The Greeks would only talk to the men about the subject matter & were either rude or obnoxious to the women depending on the womans age it seemed. Just rude to older ones and overly attentive & obnoxious to the young. It was annoying to say the least. After the visitors left the government offical who was babysitting them explained that it had to do with thier culture. I don't understand that----rude is rude no matter what the culture is. Anyone know something about this?
