It depends on who's making the assumption about you; if you care about the people doing it; you need to explain that it's just a friend. If these people making assumptions aren't important you than their opinion shouldn't matter to you. Let them think what they want. Who cares?

If you are in a relationship with your same-sex friend then you should be proud of it, and if you are not then be firm and stand tell them that you are not, it really does not matter what other people think but it's what you think.

I would waste NO time in telling anyone with any such suspicions the true facts! PLENTY of single women have to rely on girlfriends for companionship, emotional support, etc., when, in fact, we'd really RATHER be sharing our lives with a MAN, instead!!!

I play along. Why the need to explain to people anyway? Why entertain malicious people? My best friend and I are always being teased that we're 'together' and we just play along. No one's the wiser anyway, and it sometimes is so much fun when you look at these people react. Let them believe what they want to believe as long as you and your friend knows the truth.

Good luck
