2 questions:

1. If asked to round a number with no numbers to the right of it, what do you do? For example, if asked to round .439 to the nearest thousandths or .435 what would it be and why? Since rounding is determined by the number to the right, if there's no number to the right, how can you round it?

2. How do you convert a repeating decimal to a fraction? There's some type of process that is involved and I don't know what that is. For example how do I convert .333333 ad infinitum into a fraction? Please explain the method to use for all repeating fractions. Thank you.

As far as I understand, points on a circle have the same distance to one point. Further, points on an ellipse have the same distance to the sum of two points (foci) within it. Is there an analogous structure for the sum of three or more points? Or any other higher order structure?

In not too long, I'll have two undergrad degrees, one in graphic design and one in math. So far, I've been thinking of following the math and going into some engineering field. But is there a job that would pay enough to keep me off the streets that would combine the graphic design and math? I dearly love both of my directions of study and would be equally complimented if someone called me a math geek or computer nerd (call me both and we should find a time to go out for coffee.) Yet in all my searching, I haven't really come across anything that would fit. And in terms of the graphic design, I am not looking for a mindless job of creating the sort of graphics an amateur with a guide to Photoshop or Illustrator could do in a half hour. Just because I like math doesn't mean I don't like being creative. I use both sides of my brain, and I'd love it if I could find a job that would let me do just that. I'd really appreciate it if you'd share any thoughts you had on the matter.

What I mean is, let's say you are flipping a coin. Is it any more likely to get tails if you have flipped 1,000,000,000,000,000,000^100,000! (lol, I like that number) heads in a row, than if it was your first flip?

I mean, it is less likely that you will get the first scenario than the second, but for the single flip that I am referring to, is it's likelyhood effected at all?

Please only answer if you have a reason behind your answer. Also, please think about your reason before you answer.

Five men and a monkey were shipwrecked on a island, and they spent the first day gathering coconuts. They piled them up together and then went to sleep for the night.

But when they were all asleep one man woke up, and he thought there might be a row about dividing the coconuts in the morning, so he decided to take his share. So he divided the coconuts into file piles. He had one coconut left over, and he gave that to the monkey, and he hid his pile and put the rest all back together.

By and by the next man woke up and did the same thing. And he had one left over and he gave it to the monkey. And all five men did the same thing, one after the other; each one taking a fifth of the coconuts in the pile when he woke up, and each one having one left over for the monkey.

And in the morning they divided what coconuts were left and they came out in five equal shares. Of course each one knew that there were coconuts missing but noone spoke up.

How many coconuts were there in the beginning?

Please don't accuse me of asking you to do my homework. I have the answer to this question and am only posting it for fun:

Consider a perfectly rectangular room 12 ft high, 12 ft wide, 30 ft long. A spider is in the middle of one end wall, 1 ft from the ceiling. A fly is in the middle of the opposite wall, 1 ft from the floor and paralyzed with fear.

What is the shortest distance the spider must crawl along the walls, ceiling and/or floor in order to reach the fly.

I'm not looking for just their names, I want to know the position of the active cells in it, so that I can actually see something besides a brief description of what it does :-/

Thanks

P.S. I'm talking about standard life rules:

1. Any live cell with fewer than two neighbours dies, as if by loneliness.
2. Any live cell with more than three neighbours dies, as if by overcrowding.
3. Any live cell with two or three neighbours lives, unchanged, to the next generation.
4. Any dead cell with exactly three neighbours comes to life.

Also, on a standard 2 dimensional grid with only dead or alive cells.
